So for my first post in this new space, I want to showcase the Century III Mall. This was not only the location for the inaugural Dead Malls of Discord Summit, but it's the contender for my favorite mall of all time (contending with Schuylkill). To celebrate this mall, here are the three videos I produced. What do you all think about Century III?

With great interest I read the comments here from Greg Weimerskirch and the carpeting we used at Century III in 1979. We already in August of 1974 when we opened Altamonte Mall in Florida used carpeting throughout and especially in our larger courts and or feature areas. The same for our Aurora Mall in Denver which we opened in August 1975.
"Mr. D" always pushed reds as this was his most favorite color and in his judgment gave the mall a bit of a punch. Ironically around 1980 we totally (100%) carpeted our Southern Park Mall directly across the street from our Youngstown home offices. Who would have thought? Someone at the time said that we will need to replace the carpet every few years since smoking was allowed in all our malls with absolutely no restrictions throughout. “Mr. D” said: "Replacing the carpet? That is not so, we will instead be replacing the Mall Manager."
But as time went on mall operations got their way after all and carpeting in our malls was essentially abolished and always replaced with hard surfaces. The posted pictures are from Altamonte, Aurora, Red Bird and Randall Park malls some from the day of their opening and when carpeting was big. I must have hundreds of 'unpublished' and original pictures from these good old mall days and times and keeping these old photos and collaterals in a large old straw suitcase under my bed. It is my Pandora's box. Whenever I open the suitcase I never know what image will grab me; never know what memories will try to live again through my eyes.
Given the chance I talked with many of my former colleagues about the times working at DeBartolo and the opening of the Century III Mall. I would often refer to the fact that the mall had 3-levels. And with the third level during its design phase in Youngstown, scheduled to be a unique shopping destination (or experience) and to feature only Furniture and "Home Goods" type stores. And then it being directly connected to the Food Court where the Mom’s and kids were. This is how we sold this somewhat 'hidden small third level' or enclave crunched in the back of the mall to prospective tenants.
Early in our design reviews many of us told Jack Calpin our head of design and engineering in Youngstown, that this was a bad idea! A orphaned third level? But Jack liked it and evidently "Mr. D" supported him. No further questions were thus raised by us or the other inhouse executive teams.
Going forward: The idea and its design did not work. There was nothing like it in any of our other malls and from then on this type of merchandising idea or design never flew again. I don’t think that we ever fully leased the third level and Jack of course keeping quite like it never happened.
Yes Sal...I really welcome you showcasing Century III. Great memories prevail. Many years since have passed and when I spearheaded the 'Grand Opening' and the appointment of Frank C. Barrios the first GM of Century III.
I lived in Youngstown then handling all of the EJD mall openings. Previously Frank and I opened together Regency Square in Augusta and Pinellas Square in Florida. Frank clearly was the best GM we had on the bench at that time! Century III was almost as important to "Mr. DeBartolo" as Randall Park Mall which he fully owned and controlled. Perhaps "Mr. D" as we called him was hoping that US-Steel who joint-ventured the mall with us, would later step up to the bar with more cash for his upcoming and swankier mall projects? Indeed US-Steel at the tme had the big money and very deep pockets.
I am still in touch as Frank Barrios is now retired in Florida his home State. Frank did well in his career as later we both together opened Copley Place in Boston and then Frank going to Water Tower Place and 900 North Michigan in Chicago as their GM. We both loved having worked for URBAN. (UIDC)
I miss that mall.
I wish I could have seen more
